Penny Halgren Solves A Big Quilting Problem, Easily
Greetings Quilter,
Some quilting problems are bigger than others.
And some are more easily solved than others.
I remember quilts I made where the backing and batting ended
up smaller than the quilt top after I finished quilting.
That seems to be just one of the mysteries of quilting. Kind
of like those accurate 1/4 inch seam allowances. Maybe some
physicist has an explanation. But probably none of them are
even looking at the dilemma.
Anyway, early on I learned to make sure that my batting and
backing were 2-3 inches larger than the quilt top all the way
around the quilt. That way, even when the batting and backing
shrink, they are still larger than the quilt top, and can be
trimmed to even all the edges of the quilt.
Years ago, before I learned that trick, I ended up with quilts
smaller than I planned. I'd usually cut the border off to get
the sides of the quilt even so I could bind it.
But, a while back, a quilter wrote in saying that the backing
and batting of her quilt were smaller than the front, and she
hadn't started quilting it yet.
Now that is a problem relatively easily solved. The most
obvious solution, I guess, is to start over – choosing a
different fabric for the backing and using a new piece of
batting.
However, it seemed the quilt was already basted and she didn't
really want to change everything.
So, I developed an alternative solution – add to the backing
and batting. It's not really a complex solution, but the
explanation includes a description of how to piece the batting
together.
If you've never done that, it is a handy skill to know, and
easier shown than written out in an email.

P.S. I remember one quilt where the back was smaller than
the front, and I added a wider binding just to cover up the
problem.

This could be the answer to some of your future quilting
dilemmas, too:

HEARTS AND FLOWERS
I was sitting out with my friend Beverly the other day, on the first sunny day she had off from work. Bev is a CNA, and a very good one; she works with the elderly to help them recover after surgery. It was beautiful, with just enough wind to make the sun, just right. I'm not one to take in the sun but Bev is, she loves her summers to sit out, developing her tan, and getting ready for her summer vacation to Plum Island. Needless to say, I got too much, but I'm glad I got to sit out with her; it seems every day off she has includes rain.
Our friend Carole came by and brought a quilt she had made. As a beginner I need all the help I can get. Carole made this quilt many years ago and it is just such an inspiration to me. Right away Bev wanted to buy it. I was more interested in the "how to aspect." Well Carole showed up yesterday with the patterns for the appliques and I believe my next quilt will be a similar one. I am adding the pictures and the patterns pieces Carole sent with it. I hope it helps another beginner. Maybe a seasoned quilter can add to the pattern and make it their own. I have included the pattern pieces she made.

WE ARE BOTH WORKING ON QUILTS
Image by Flatbush Gardener via Flickr
Creativity comes to us in so many different ways, sometimes it comes from sadness, grief, and even disability. My creativity is surfacing from my disability and I am tying new things. Two years ago I learned tole painting, before that I learned gardening and created a beautiful garden, this year it is quilting. I have made a video of my first quilting block that I would like to share with everyone. Oh Right, I also learned blogging and now video blogging, photography and have returned to college to complete my degree. I'm one of those people that buys all the books, never reads them, just glances when it is necessary and then I jump right into whatever it is I am doing. Luckily for me, I am surrounded by grateful, loving people who always lend a hand. I have learned so many things from so many friends, and this video
I am sharing from something my friend Carole showed me the other day. We are both working on quilts. I hope you enjoy the video and let me know. Please leave a comments or link to my blog, with your crafting or quilting resources.
Sorry...watch for the video, I'm having trouble uploading it.

THIS BLOG IS TO SHARE CRAFTS WITH OTHER CRAFTERS
There seems to be no way to stop this from happening but please disregard these postings that are not about crafts. The purpose of my blog is to share crafts, quilting, painting and other creative energies with others. It seems impossible to keep people from posting to my blogs. I am finding this on my other blogs also. Please disregard them and know that i am doing my best to try and stop this from happening.
