NAMIWalks - Surging Across America, Raising Community Awareness

This is another big weekend in the 2009 NAMIWalk season with 13 events scheduled across the country. These Walks have a combined goal of raising more than $1.4 million this weekend!

Last weekend, TV and movie star Glenn Close joined the NAMIWalk in Maine while Extreme Makeover: Home Edition star Ty Pennington walked with NAMI in New York. Their willingness to join this growing public discussion and add their own stories is another sign of how far NAMI has come.

On Saturday, May 16th the following communities will hold NAMIWalks.

NAMI Fresno will hold their 5th Walk at Roeding Park in Fresno, CA.

NAMI Colorado will hold their first Walk at Cheesman Park in Denver.

NAMI Connecticut will hold their 6th Walk at Bushnell Park in Hartford.

NAMI Seneca-Sandusky-Wyandot and Hancock Counties will hold their 4th Walk at Conner Park in Fremont & Riverside Park in Findlay, Ohio.

NAMI Oklahoma will hold their 4th Walk at Stars and Stripes Park in Oklahoma City.

NAMI Beaufort will hold their 4th Walk at the County University of South Carolina in Bluffton, SC.

NAMI South Dakota will hold their 6th Walk at Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls.

NAMI Vermont will hold their 3rd Walk on the State House Lawn in Montpelier.

NAMI Washington will hold their 5th Walk in Magnuson Park at Sand Point in Seattle.

NAMI Greater Milwaukee will hold their 5th Walk at Veterans' Park on Lincoln Memorial Drive.

The NAMI Wisconsin Walk in Waukesha will be their 6th Walk and it will be held at Frame Park.

On Sunday, May 17th the following communities will hold NAMIWalks.

The NAMI Long Island/Queens Area Walk will be the 5th Walk and will be held at Jones Beach Boardwalk, Parking Field #5 in Wantagh, NY.

The NAMI Northwest Walk is one of the original 12 sites to hold a NAMIWalk and they will hold their 7th event at Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade Festival Area in Portland, OR.

If you are reading this and are near one of the 80 NAMIWalks being organized for 2009, get connected and join the fun!

In the 6 years since its inception, NAMIWalks for the Mind of America has become the largest national mental health awareness event and one of the fastest growing programs of it kind. More than 250,000 walkers have participated, raising nearly $30 million to fund state and local NAMI advocacy, education and support programs. To find the NAMIWalk nearest you, visit NAMI's Web site.

May Issue of Convention E-Newsletter Now Available!

Older Americans' Mental Health Week: May 24-30

Older Americans' Mental Health Week is an opportunity to educate the American public and policy makers about mental illness. To learn more, click here.

NAMI Elections 2009 - Come Meet the NAMI National Board Candidates!

Affiliate leaders should watch for voting packets in the mail after May 20th.

Special Bilingual Issue of ¡Avanzamos! Available Now

The ninth issue of NAMI's colorful Spanish-language newsletter is now available. This is a special fully bilingual issue, offering articles in both Spanish and English provided by guest contributors from the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School who share with us the results of their latest findings and discuss key issues in Latino mental health. Implementation Grant Opportunity for NAMI States and Affiliates - Deadline Approaching

NAMI National is offering Implementation Grants to roll out the In Living Color: Depression Treatment in Primary Care education program. NAMI National will select 4 sites who will receive $4,500 to cover the costs associated with implementing and evaluating the course. In addition to funding, grant program sites will receive technical assistance from the Multicultural Action Center, and will participate in initiative updates/training conference calls.

In Living Color: Depression Treatment in Primary Care is a s a three hour education course designed to equip physicians practicing in primary care settings with the knowledge and tools to identify and provide appropriate treatment of depression to medically underserved ethnic and racial groups. The course is facilitated by a team consisting of a consumer, a family member, and a physician. This program was jointly developed, piloted, and evaluated by NAMI and the American Psychiatric Association. For more information about the program and to download the application form click here.

The application deadline is Monday, May 18th. Only complete applications will be considered. Please contact the Multicultural Action Center at macenter@nami.org or 703-312-7883 if you have any questions.

Special Event: NAMI Convention Film

NAMI's 30th anniversary convention in San Francisco on Sunday. July 5 with a screening of the PBS documentary, "When Medicine Got It Wrong," about NAMI's dramatic grassroots origins and founding as a national organization. The film premieres publicly in the fall. In the 1970s, families rebelled against medical theories that blamed schizophrenia on bad parenting and changed forever how mental illness is viewed. Their activism continues today.

Besides honoring NAMI's founders, the screening will launch a campaign to publicize the fall broadcast. Come celebrate NAMI's heritage and help make NAMI a household word. This is one convention event you don't want to miss. Register now for the convention. Special hotel and airline rates are available. See other events on the convention program.

BLOGGING FOR CAUSES

PeonyImage via Wikipedia

I've been a bit amiss in my blogging lately. The weather has gotten so beautiful here in New England, and I have been craving the sunshine. I haven't really exposed myself to sun for a few years, so the tan of my skin is taking me back.

I have planted my (almost) entire garden for the year. Some of the favorites I lost during my last move have been replaced with a new generation. Some plants are just so beautiful one cannot bring oneself to disturb their dormant resting place. I can still visit them though, they are not far from where I am now.

I have replaced by Peony (Paeonia)with the same one "Sarah Berhardt." The one I had at my old home the birds took from it and mixed it with my neighbor Jan's "white peony" and created a new one that took the white of Jan's and the pink of mine and dropped the creation, in my neighbors Jean's English Garden, and it is the most beautiful thing. White with a burst of dark pink in the center. We sometimes take mother nature's power for granted, so it takes a simple miracle of life like the creation of a new generation of a plant to bring us back. I am in awe of the things that grow in my garden. I am trying for the third time to grow "Clematis," this time it is "Barbara Harrington" a deep red bloom that I'm sure will attract hummingbird's to my new home. I also put red petunia, red and white Salvia, a couple of Dracena spikes, some blue and white Lobelia, and some flowering variegated vingka to complete my window box. I found that I had an old green one in my shed, so I painted it with "stone like" spray and it came out looking like a stone window box.

I also replaced my butterfly bush. I never want to go through a summer without the Monarch Butterfly. It always reminds me of the story that Wayne dyer tells about the Monarch that went home with him on his finger. What a great story.

My back garden is where my hydrangea and vegetables are planted. I have put in tomatoes, peppers, oregano, sage, and basil. The scent of the basil is so overwhelming when fresh. I like to take the tomatoes (that don't get eaten right away,) and put them in the blender with some of the herbs and freeze them for a fall Marinara Sauce. With everything fresh from the garden it is the best sauce I can ever make. You really can't add too much to my sauce to make it better, except to make it from totally fresh products.

I am at the maintenance stage of my garden now, and I have learned a couple of things:
1. I can do squats, although painful; which gives me no excuse to avoid exercise to drop this additional weight I have taken on.
2. Allow nature and everything in the present to do it's job. Leave it alone, the Universe compensates for it without our help. That is a tough one for me, but reading "The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle, is showing me how to do this. I am grateful and blessed to have such a beautiful garden; and the knowing that I will receive so much more abundance from this new one, with just a little gentle care.
