NAMIWalks - Surging Across America, Raising Community Awareness
This is another big weekend in the 2009 NAMIWalk season with 13 events scheduled across the country. These Walks have a combined goal of raising more than $1.4 million this weekend!
Last weekend, TV and movie star Glenn Close joined the NAMIWalk in Maine while Extreme Makeover: Home Edition star Ty Pennington walked with NAMI in New York. Their willingness to join this growing public discussion and add their own stories is another sign of how far NAMI has come.
On Saturday, May 16th the following communities will hold NAMIWalks.
NAMI Fresno will hold their 5th Walk at Roeding Park in Fresno, CA.
NAMI Colorado will hold their first Walk at Cheesman Park in Denver.
NAMI Connecticut will hold their 6th Walk at Bushnell Park in Hartford.
NAMI Seneca-Sandusky-Wyandot and Hancock Counties will hold their 4th Walk at Conner Park in Fremont & Riverside Park in Findlay, Ohio.
NAMI Oklahoma will hold their 4th Walk at Stars and Stripes Park in Oklahoma City.
NAMI Beaufort will hold their 4th Walk at the County University of South Carolina in Bluffton, SC.
NAMI South Dakota will hold their 6th Walk at Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls.
NAMI Vermont will hold their 3rd Walk on the State House Lawn in Montpelier.
NAMI Washington will hold their 5th Walk in Magnuson Park at Sand Point in Seattle.
NAMI Greater Milwaukee will hold their 5th Walk at Veterans' Park on Lincoln Memorial Drive.
The NAMI Wisconsin Walk in Waukesha will be their 6th Walk and it will be held at Frame Park.
On Sunday, May 17th the following communities will hold NAMIWalks.
The NAMI Long Island/Queens Area Walk will be the 5th Walk and will be held at Jones Beach Boardwalk, Parking Field #5 in Wantagh, NY.
The NAMI Northwest Walk is one of the original 12 sites to hold a NAMIWalk and they will hold their 7th event at Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade Festival Area in Portland, OR.

In the 6 years since its inception, NAMIWalks for the Mind of America has become the largest national mental health awareness event and one of the fastest growing programs of it kind. Older Americans' Mental Health Week: May 24-30
One in four American adults has a diagnosable mental illness, but less than one-quarter of older adults with mental illness receive any type of mental health attention. Older Americans' Mental Health Week is an opportunity to educate the American public and policy makers about mental illness. To learn more, click here.
NAMI Elections 2009 - Come Meet the NAMI National Board Candidates!
Sixteen candidates have been nominated for the five NAMI National board seats that are open in this election year. Voting delegates must cast votes for five candidates. You can read the candidates' profiles online by clicking here. Voting takes place at Convention and via absentee ballots. Affiliate leaders should watch for voting packets in the mail after May 20th.
Special Bilingual Issue of ¡Avanzamos! Available Now
The ninth issue of NAMI's colorful Spanish-language newsletter is now available. This is a special fully bilingual issue, offering articles in both Spanish and English provided by guest contributors from the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School who share with us the results of their latest findings and discuss key issues in Latino mental health. The issue also features a NAMI member's personal story of recovery, and information on NAMI's Grading the States 2009. Implementation Grant Opportunity for NAMI States and Affiliates - Deadline Approaching
NAMI National is offering Implementation Grants to roll out the In Living Color: Depression Treatment in Primary Care education program. NAMI National will select 4 sites who will receive $4,500 to cover the costs associated with implementing and evaluating the course. In addition to funding, grant program sites will receive technical assistance from the Multicultural Action Center, and will participate in initiative updates/training conference calls.
In Living Color: Depression Treatment in Primary Care is a s a three hour education course designed to equip physicians practicing in primary care settings with the knowledge and tools to identify and provide appropriate treatment of depression to medically underserved ethnic and racial groups. The course is facilitated by a team consisting of a consumer, a family member, and a physician. This program was jointly developed, piloted, and evaluated by NAMI and the American Psychiatric Association. For more information about the program and to download the application form click here.

Special Event: NAMI Convention Film
NAMI's 30th anniversary convention in San Francisco on Sunday. July 5 with a screening of the PBS documentary, "When Medicine Got It Wrong," about NAMI's dramatic grassroots origins and founding as a national organization. The film premieres publicly in the fall. In the 1970s, families rebelled against medical theories that blamed schizophrenia on bad parenting and changed forever how mental illness is viewed. Their activism continues today.
Besides honoring NAMI's founders, the screening will launch a campaign to publicize the fall broadcast. Come celebrate NAMI's heritage and help make NAMI a household word. NAMIWalks - Accepting Applications for New WALK Sites in 2010
NAMIWalks is now accepting applications for affiliate and state organizations that wish to join the 80 current franchised WALK sites participating in the program.

De Familia a Familia National Teacher Training
We are delighted to announce that we will host a De Familia a Familia national teacher training. This is a wonderful opportunity to begin or expand De Familia a Familia classes in your state. The teacher training will be held August 14 - 16 2009 in St. Louis, MO at the Hilton Airport Hotel. The registration fee is $300 (includes lodging in a shared room, meals, and materials) plus the roundtrip airfare to St. Louis. The training begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday and ends at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Trainees must be bilingual or Spanish-speaking family members, and must agree to teach two course cycles of De Familia a Familia.
Your timely response to this announcement is very important in helping us determine the level of interest. Please contact Ana Ferrara on or before June 15 with questions and/or to request a training application. Don't miss the deadline!
The 2009 Family-to-Family Hall of Fame
It is time to nominate Family-to-Family teachers who have taught 10 or more classes and also teachers who have taught 20+ classes. Teachers in attendance at the NAMI Convention in San Francisco will be honored at the Education reception. All teachers will receive a Family-to-Family Hall of Fame certificate.
The nomination must come to us from the state Family-to-Family program director or executive director. We are also taking nominations for Family-to-Family trainers who have led 10 or more Family-to-Family teacher training sessions. The deadline to receive nominations is May 30.
