Making a Quilt Sandwich

Grams' Quilt (1992)Image by Jalsoli via Flickr

PENNY HAS THE ANSWERS TO ALL THE QUESTIONS NEWBIES LIKE I HAVE:
Greetings Quilter
Lunch time?  No, not really!

Making a quilt sandwich has nothing to do with putting a tasty
treat between slices of bread.

It has everything to do with making progress on your quilt and
getting it ready to sew beautiful quilting stitches.

Whether you are machine quilting or quilting by hand, layering
your quilt correctly can make the difference between smooth
layers and sewing puckers and tucks into your quilt.

Many quilters freeze when it comes time to layering a quilt.
But knowing just a few techniques will make it easy to
accomplish and ensure that your finished quilt will be
beautiful and pucker-free.

One of the most important things is to make sure that all of
the wrinkles are removed before you add the next layer.

As I quilted my first quilt, I discovered that the batting and
backing layers tend to shrink.  I'll probably never understand
why that happens, but it does.  As a result, I make sure that
the backing and batting extend at least 2 inches beyond the
quilt top.

Once all of the layers are smooth and centered, it's time to
baste them together.  This step is very important and will help
keep the puckers and tucks out of the back of your quilt as you
sew your quilting stitches.

You'll find tips for layering and basting, including a video,
here:

quite good enough:

Border Designs for Your Quilt

When you get to a particular point in making your first quilt,
you realize there are four corners that you must do something
with.

Many people let their first experience with corners keep them
from ever attempting another quilt project.

Do not get cornered by quilt corners.  You have options and
solutions that are easy enough with a little practice.

We want our quilts to look good, obviously.  A lot of work goes
into your quilt and a final step like corner work shouldn't be
a big dilemma.

One of the choices is to leave the corners as strips that bump
up to each other or to miter the corners.

There are a couple of ways to add simple strips to the sides of
your quilt without mitering the corners or complicating the
borders with cornerstones.

Rather than explain it, you'll get pictures and a description
when you visit:

P.S.  One other key is to make sure that the measurements for
your borders are correct. You'll find a link for a video
showing how to measure for your borders:

We love this recipe for using our late season tomatoes.....
Tomato

Gilroy Garlic Festival's
Bruschetta

Makes: 6 to 8 servings

Combine:

3 to 4 cups of fresh or drained canned small-diced tomatoes
3 Tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
2 to 3 finely chopped plump garlic cloves
a splash of balsamic vinegar
a pinch of red pepper flakes

Taste and adjust seasonings.  Let rest for 30 minutes, if possible.

Spoon a generous amount of tomato mixture on garlic bread.  Sprinkle with grated mozzarella cheese and serve
.

Did you know...
Sewing Machine 101

Recently, I took my sewing machine in for a service call.  The technician reminded me that the pressure foot needed to be in the up position before threading.  The up position opens the tension disks and allows the thread to fit between them.

He also pointed out that if your thread breaks while sewing you may need to turn your thread spool around.  Much like a kink in a hose when it is unwound incorrectly, the thread will become twisted, taunt and finally break.

AMERICAN RETRO. Think back to the simple days of bobby socks and dates at the soda fountain; pajama parties and dance marathons, circa 1945. America was migrating to the suburbs in numbers never before seen. Colors in this period became vibrant and full of life as America moved out of the depression with its eye on victory in the war in Europe. Taking its cue from delightful kitchen textiles to stylish apparel, American Retro combines fashion vogue from this bygone era into a collection for the modern quilter. Click here to order.

SUNBONNET SUE.
This fabulous bundle of 41 prints by Windham Fabrics, was inspired by a 1930s quilt pattern classic. Complete with cheater prints and adorable coordinates, Sunbonnet Sue is credited to Bertha Corbett Melcher who was challenged to portray expressions without a face in her drawings. The result was the iconic fun-loving child with her face hidden by a bonnet. Sunbonnet Sue has been a quilter's favorite ever since. Click here to order.

SUNBONNET SUE.
Follow Sunbonnet Sue as she goes about her chores in this creative interpretation of a quilt lover's classic.
